Rock Hall Maryland, Rock Hall Harbor on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay

Rock Hall harbor has been a watermen's harbor from it conception.  When the striped bass moratorium was in effect, a large amount of waterfront property was sold to developers for marinas and condominiums.

The image below of Rock Hall Harbor was taken during oyster season. The oyster boats in the picture are the watermen from Smith Island, who travel to the upper bay to harvest oysters.  Oysters in the lower bay have been devastated by two parasites, MSX and Dermo.

Smith Island oystermen live on their boats during the oyster season, going home on weekends.  Smith is an Island in the Lower Chesapeake Bay  off of Crisfield in Somerset County.  People traveling to Smith Island must take a boat from the mainland as there is no connecting roadway or bridge.  The Upper Chesapeake Bay, the Chester River, the Choptank River and Eastern Bay are the only oysters that were not completely wiped out by MSX and Dermo.

Rock Hall Harbor still is the port for the local fishermen, crabbers, oystermen, clammers, charterboats plus the hundreds of sail and power pleasure boats. There are many bed and breakfasts, fine restaurants in the area and the finest fresh Maryland seafood you'll find anywhere!
